Nja Mahdaoui creates contemporary illustrations for the One Thousand and One Nights love story La Volupté d'en Mourir, the Tale of Ali Ben Bakkar & Shams an-Nahar.
This tale, until then unpublished into French, tells in fourteen Nights (153 to 169) the impossible love between two young people. This translation by Jamal Eddine Bencheikh, from the editions of the Boulaq, the Macnaghten known as Calcutta II, Cairo & Muhsin Mahdi in Leyden, offers the most complete version existing to date.

The work of Nja Mahdaoui masterfully accompanies the ‘funeral and triumphant march’ of this surprising tale and punctuate the movements of the text with wide black volutes. The color in its magnificence, evokes the wealth of fabrics and clothes.

The book is a reproduction of the eponym original silkscreen print Portfolio
created by Nja Mahdaoui and realized in Lyon, by Paul Mabboux in 1992.
